How to tell if a diamond is real test easy!
By admin | August 5, 2010
You can tell if a diamond is real with a few very simple tests first: All real diamonds have what is called a refraction line (see illustration to left) through the center of the diamond running horizontally. This line can be seen when open sided settings are used. Although this is perfectly normally traditionally the diamond is placed in a 6 prong setting for an engagement ring thus not exposing the sides.
Very often people bring diamonds to a jeweler and they are shown this very normal line and told the diamond is cracked or structure has some problem.  This might be said for a variety of everyday business reasons – if selling a diamond to a local jeweler who sells silver, necklaces, puce shells and a variety of broaches and such he might think you want to sell it to him in the back of his mind so it’s important to him that you are shown this horizontal line so he can make you an offer he feels will satisfy you. Perhaps, a seller of all kinds of trinkets and merchandise may feel that if you see this horizontal line that he shows you will perhaps get you to buy one of his that is surrounded already in an enclosed type of setting that you can’t see the same horizontal line he just showed you on yours. This is a common business practice in many businesses not just jewelry.
The second way to test a diamond to know if it is real is you can place the diamond upside down with the flat side on a piece of newspaper print like this “^” thus when you try to read through the diamond from the point down you will see blurry text or distorted text coming back at you kind of like an awkward magnifying glass. However, if it comes back crisp and clear its likely glass or common cz that has been provided. However, in the year 2010 it is unlikely that anyone is going to give you their phone number, show you their face and then sell you something that would not be real. This would be foolish for an individual to spend 10 years in jail for such a small amount of money so from what we have observed all sellers even our competitors sell real diamonds.
Finally try not to get lost in the diamond buying process with worry and fear. You are always fully protected with your credit card, there is a full paper trail and most reputable sellers on-line will even give a licensed GIA appraisal from a licensed and accredited expert that is perfectly valid for insurance purposes. Do not get confused appraisals are general guidelines for buyers however a GIA Certified diamond is a premium diamond that has been reviewed at the GIA Headquarters buy several experts over a period of often days. You will be hard pressed to find that type of diamond on-line for less than $6000 per carat.
Usually from our experience the more worried types are generally looking for something that is so low priced they want to believe their greed has found them a great deal and will even wire cash to a non-entity. Never wire cash to anyone, always use a merchant using Paypal or another verified credit card processor so you can always feel confident in tracking your seller, your sale, and your money. Feel free to ask questions they are welcome FreddyDiamonds.com
